The CoolGlide® laser system is indicated for the treatment of varicose veins based on "selective photothermolysis" of blood vessels. It can be used to treat a wide range of lesions from fine, superficial facial and leg spider veins to somewhat larger reticular veins.

The goal is to elevate the temperature of the blood in the targeted vein to a level that causes clotting without damaging the epidermis or surrounding tissue. Because the laser energy is absorbed by melanin in the epidermis, as well as the desired target of hemoglobin in the vein, the skin-cooling feature in the laser handpiece is used to pre-cool the skin and reduce its peak temperature. Additionally, because the heat generated in the vein can be conducted to the surface epidermis, the cooling handpiece is used to post-cool the skin and reduce the rise in temperature. Multiple treatments may be necessary to obtain a satisfactory response for some vascular lesions.
