Spider Veins & Facial Telangiectasia

Spider Veins and Facial Telangiectasia are small varicose veins close to the surface of the skin, that provide no useful purpose. They are usually due to hereditary weakness in the walls of the blood vessels. Because hormonal factors such as puberty, pregnancy, birth control pills and menopause affect blood vessels, more women than men are affected. Standing or sitting in the same position for prolonged periods of time can also make spider veins worse. The CoolGlide® laser system is indicated for the treatment of varicose veins based on "selective photothermolysis" of blood vessels. It can be used to treat a wide range of lesions from fine, superficial facial and leg spider veins to somewhat larger reticular veins.

The goal is to elevate the temperature of the blood in the targeted vein to a level that causes clotting without damaging the epidermis or surrounding tissue. Because the laser energy is absorbed by melanin in the epidermis, as well as the desired target of hemoglobin in the vein, the skin-cooling feature in the laser handpiece is used to pre-cool the skin and reduce its peak temperature. Additionally, because the heat generated in the vein can be conducted to the surface epidermis, the cooling handpiece is used to post-cool the skin and reduce the rise in temperature. Multiple treatments may be necessary to obtain a satisfactory response for some vascular lesions.

About Laser Vein Removal

The primary steps for laser vein removal treatments include shaving and cleaning the area prior to treatment, and typically, applying a thin layer of clear gel, such as ultrasound gel, to aid in the gliding of the handpiece. In some cases a topical anesthetic may be applied. The laser parameters are set based on the area and type of vascular lesions to be treated. The treatment is performed by gliding the laser handpiece along the area to be treated, using the handpiece to pre-cool the epidermis, deliver the laser energy, and then post-cool the area just treated. Immediately after the procedure, further cooling will be done.
